Acupuncture is an ancient technique in which a skilled practitioner inserts
hair-thin needles into specific points on the body to prevent or treat
illness. Practiced for over 2,500 years in China, where it originated,
acupuncture is part of the holistic system of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM),
which views health as a constantly changing flow of energy, or qi . In TCM,
imbalances in this natural flow of energy are thought to result in disease.
Acupuncture aims to restore health by improving the flow of qi. It has not
been fully explained how acupuncture works within the framework of the
Western system of medicine that is commonly practiced in the United States.
It is proposed that acupuncture produces its effects through regulating the
nervous system, thus aiding the activity of pain-killing biochemicals such
as endorphins and immune system cells at specific sites in the body. In
addition, studies have shown that acupuncture may alter brain chemistry by
changing the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones and, thus,
affecting the parts of the central nervous system related to sensation and
involuntary body functions, such as immune reactions and processes that
regulate a person's blood pressure, blood flow, and body temperature.

Typically, first time patients of acupuncture report a strange but pleasant
sensation at the points of insertion. The needles used are extremely thin,
sterilized- about the size of a thick human hair - and can produce feelings
of, tingling, warmth, or pressure when inserted. Some patients have even
fallen asleep, as acupuncture induces extraordinary relaxation in many
people. Some report the sensation as energetic, but very few refer to it as
painful.
Other forms of treatment involve the use of electric needle, hot stone: a
thermal therapy to use basalt and sedimentary palm stones warmed, working in
harmony stimulating various acupuncture points or channels thus relaxing the
body at its deepest level. This creates harmony and a positive energy flow
promoting a sense of balance and peace. I will also discuss herbal
prescriptions, changes in diet and therapeutic exercises. I will consult
with patients about their ailments in detail so that a custom treatment plan
can be created and followed.
