Regular Doctors Didn’t Help

I was referred to Li Zhang and Qi for Life by my massage therapist.  I had always been interested in acupuncture, but the idea that poking little needles into my skin could be healthful was a bit of a stretch for me.  However, I knew that massage had been helpful for me—so I considered acupuncture for quite awhile before pursuing it.  What finally caused me to go was experiencing many symptoms over a long time that I couldn’t easily attribute to a particular illness—things like fatigue, night sweats, weight gain. I finally wrote them down and there were 10 different symptoms.  I decided to go to an internal medicine doctor for a physical (since I hadn’t been to regular, non-OBGYN doctor in probably 5 years).  The doctor finished the checkup and told me that I was fine – nothing was wrong with me.  She had no explanation for my symptoms other than to tell me sometimes we get these things. I expected more from a medical doctor—especially one who treated me like I didn’t know what I was talking about and she did.  That week, I called Li’s office and booked my appointment.

Skeptical of Acupuncture

When I showed up to Li’s office, she had me complete quite a bit of paperwork.  I was more than a little skeptical and deliberately left off some information that might lead her to diagnose the symptoms I was having.  I figured if she was for real, she would figure out my symptoms through the magic of acupuncture.  When she showed me into her treatment room, the first thing she did was look at my nails, my tongue and then spent about 3-5 minutes feeling my pulse.  From those actions alone, she immediately told me that I was probably experiencing 8 out 10 of my symptoms! (These are the same symptoms the internal medicine doc couldn’t identify.) Then, she asked key questions that directly related to those and the other 2 symptoms.  I was almost in tears.  How could she know??  I was still skeptical, but feeling better about trying acupuncture.

Li then briefly explained acupuncture: that the needles she used were thinner than a human hair and that it may be uncomfortable when she first inserted them just a tiny way into the skin.  I laid on a massage-type table (I was comfortable, not too warm or too cold) and she began “needling” me in the areas that she diagnosed as being “weak”.  The weaker the energy in a certain area, the more it immediately hurt when she needled me there.  However, the pain left as quickly as it was felt.  Once she placed all of the needles, she played calm music and I actually fell asleep with all the needles in!  When she started taking the needles out, I woke up and felt like I had been sleeping forever.  I was a bit dazed and felt a bit relaxed—similar to the feeling after getting a massage.

Incredible Results

In terms of results, I have been going for regular treatment for 8 months.  Most people do not need to go for acupuncture for that long (I had a bit of a chronic issue).  Most all of the symptoms have gone away.  I can breathe like I haven’t in years—so much so that I have started running again.  My fatigue and night sweats are also gone.  I had some numbness in my foot which is completely gone—and I had had that numbness for several years (again, the medical doc didn’t know what to do with it)!  I will continue to go back as needed and have referred Li to most everyone I know.  I was a skeptic – but no more!

Impeccable Credentials

That said, Li is probably one of the very few acupuncturists I would ever go to.  Her credentials are impeccable.  Not only did she study acupuncture in China for 8 years (she is Chinese) and practice at the most prestigious hospital there, but she also has a medical degree from China and practiced “western” medicine there for many years as well.  Although she decided not to pursue medical licensing in the US, she has been a medical researcher at Vanderbilt Medical Center with some of the top medical researchers.  She is comfortable in the worlds of both western and traditional Chinese medicine.  Her depth of knowledge and understanding of medicine along with her years of experience give me a level of confidence I have found with few professions in the medical field (and I worked with medical specialists for many years!).  And hey, my results speak for themselves!

Check it out for Yourself!

Because of Li, I love acupuncture—okay, I love what it does for me, even if I don’t always love the needling part!  Honestly, I would rather NOT tell anyone about Li because she might get too busy to see me. But if anyone asks me about acupuncture I’m sure I sound like a babbling zealot regarding Li and her traditional Chinese medicine.  If you are considering acupuncture, call Qi for Life and speak with Li Zhang.  Then book an appointment.  I’m pretty sure you’ll be telling all of your friends and family about her, too.
